Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
