WHO Sounds Alert Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have access to them, warns the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial guidance on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for broader and more equitable access to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, explains the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even under the current most optimistic outlook, the production of these medications might only reach around 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The advice calls on countries and companies to expand availability, by measures such as licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Work

These medications imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and boost the sense of being full so individuals eat less.

Patients commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Research indicates users may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the treatment, because their typical food cravings resume.

To be carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
